No Kids' Art this week. Instead I'm going to switch generations on you and show you my mother's work instead of my childrens'. My mother has recently undergone two emergency surgeries ten days apart. That's where I was this last week and will be for probably most of next, so StudioL will be rather quiet for a bit. Prayers, good thoughts, well wishes, etc. for my mom would be most welcome.

Soccer camp, playing with a friend, lunch at the golf course, the afternoon at the pool with their friend, dinner out to a new Mexican restaurant with Dad...
No wonder Mom is late with Kids' Art!
Here's a simple sketch from my youngest. We had been to a restaurant named "The Crab Shack" the night before. (No, not "Joe's" - we have our own local version.) I probably shouldn't tell you he did this during a church service...

I created this with the June Jenni Bowlin kit. This picture of my mother-in-law was taken in about the late 60s. This one brought tears to Geek Husband's eyes!
It's a little bit different than my usual style. Well, probably because it has a feminine feel to it and I mostly scrap boy layouts! In retrospect, I would have moved the stamped scroll closer to the photo corner. And yes, she was a loving wife (not a wif). The ribbon is covering up the "e".
Apparently, I can't seem to get enough mountain scenes lately. In pondering what to post for Kids Art today, I went searching through the files on the hard drive. My older son did this about 3 years ago in a Paint software program. His younger brother is such a prolific little artist that it's sometimes hard to give the older one equal time on Kids' Art. There was something sweet and simple about this one that spoke to me!
I wanted to share this vintage postcard that I picked up in a little gift shop last week.

Honestly, photos and postcards don't do this breathtaking view justice! Yes, StudioL went on vacation last week. Jackson Hole, Wyo., Yellowstone, Grand Teton National Park and 325+ photos to show for it! (That was just my camera. Geek Husband took just as many, if not more, and the 9-year old got to use an old digital and took 200 of his own!) It looks like I'll be busy doing scrapbook pages to show you the highlights of the trip. The two bison who slowed traffic to a crawl as they leisurely ambled their way down the road will most certainly get their own page.

This seems to be a recurring theme around here (along with aliens and robots).
The picture doesn't quite do justice to the 3-D aspects of the art. That funny inverted v-shape in the middle of the castle is the drawbridge. The popsicle stick character is a very brave and valiant knight. The crocodile and fish in the moat look very happy, don't they?
I also thought of titling this post "Here Comes the Sun"...
My entry in Sue's Alphabetica book:
This was a most clever book. Sue took a set of ABC file dividers (I believe they were vintage), punched holes in them and used 3 binder rings to hold them altogether. The dividers were quite sturdy, so it must have been a lot of work to punch all those holes! Her artwork on the cover and the sign-in page was just lovely.
I chose "S" initially thinking of sunflowers, but one thing led to another and so... all the words start with "sun" - most being compound words. Yes, I got out the dictionary for this one! The sun has miscellaneous confetti pieces held under the netting. It's a "shaker sun"!
(The dividers were a little too big for my scanner bed, so the edges got cut off a little - including the letter tabs.)
There was a time when I was as passionate (okay... obsessed) with fabric as I am today with paper. I made this vest ten+ years ago for my mother-in-law. After Christmas, the 4th of July was her next favorite holiday. She was just like a kid where both holidays were concerned.
I only saw her wear the vest once. I honestly don't know if she actually liked it or just wore it to make me feel good. I do know that the vest survived the major clean-out of her home of forty years as she prepared to move into an independent living setting.
I would have to get up to speed again to create something like this now! The entire vest is lined and is sewn on the machine except for the buttons (because they have shanks). There is strip piecing and free motion quilting on the entire front of the vest. The stars with the tassels have the fiber couched on and then tied into a tassel. The other stars have some very fine satin applique stitching. I remember the effort I put into getting those points as perfect as I could!
